James Marshall “Jimi” Hendrix
To this day, widely acknowledged as the best electric guitarist of all time. Engraved in history over a few years before his untimely death at the age of 27.
His music and guitar playing built on what had gone before but revolutionised the instrument and redefined what rock music could be. And pop music for that matter. It’s hard to image what has come since without Hendrix and The Beatles.
He not only thought out of the box but out of this world as his cosmic lyrics and otherworldly sounds testify.
He was skilled at the Zoom-Out, not only in aural and spacial dimensions but also in time – for example, here’s Jimi Zooming-Out on Life:
“The story of life is quicker than the wink of an eye, the story of love is hello and goodbye…”
He broke through the limitations of the day, playing a right-handed guitar upside down.
He was also a genuinely nice guy. This shines through even during his most wild on-stage moments.
Most of all he just loved to play!
Here are a couple of my own tributes to Jimi:
